ISO certification for healthcare

Connect service management with clear responsibilities.
Healthcare services, support functions and information. Explore relevant standards and the scope information to prepare for EQRM.

ACTIVITIES TO DEFINE

01

Healthcare operations

02

Administrative services

03

Support providers

Illustrative activity groups. The agreed scope describes the actual organization and work assessed.

YOUR OPERATING CONTEXT

Start with your actual activities.

Healthcare organizations may consider management systems for service quality, information handling, workplace safety and continuity. The scope must distinguish organizational processes from clinical licensing, professional registration and other specialist approvals.
Describe the facilities and services proposed for inclusion, including support functions and outsourced activities. Explain whether the organization operates facilities, provides administrative support or supplies another service. A broad healthcare label can obscure differences that matter when selecting a standard.

A DEFINED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Make the boundary clear.

Identify the organization, activities and locations to be assessed. Explain interfaces with customers, suppliers and shared functions.

STANDARDS TO CONSIDER

Match the standard to the management need.

Use these subjects as a starting point for your enquiry. Each standard has its own requirements and may have a different scope.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT

ISO 9001

Customer requirements, delivery controls and improvement.

INFORMATION SECURITY

ISO/IEC 27001

Information risks, access and supplier interfaces.

BUSINESS CONTINUITY

ISO 22301

Critical activities, disruption and recovery arrangements.

WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY

ISO 45001

Work-related risks, participation and operating controls.
Choose standards that align with your activities, objectives and operating sites.

SCOPE IN PRACTICE

Follow the responsibilities through the operation.

For example, an administrative service supporting several clinics may handle scheduling and records without providing clinical care. Its management-system scope should identify that actual role. It should not be described as certification of medical outcomes or accreditation of the clinics themselves.
Illustrative scenario, not an EQRM client case study or a prescribed control programme.

BEFORE YOU ENQUIRE

Bring the information that defines your scope.

01

The service and facility boundaries.

02

Information handled and significant outsourced functions.

03

Continuity and workplace responsibilities relevant to the scope.

04

Any additional healthcare-specific requirements relevant to your activities.
Add approximate personnel numbers, a complete site list and any existing certificates. Mention planned changes such as new locations, services or operating shifts. These are enquiry prompts, not a complete audit-document checklist.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Healthcare: common questions

Answers to common scope and application questions.
Relevant options may include ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 22301, ISO 45001. They address different management subjects; select according to your activities and buyer requirements. The list does not make every standard mandatory or confirm availability for every proposed scope.
Do not present a general quality management certificate that way. Professional competence, clinical accreditation and regulatory authorization need to be considered through their appropriate mechanisms.
Yes. Scheduling, records administration and other support services should be described according to the work performed. Do not use a support-service certificate to imply that clinical services or outcomes have been certified.
Identify the facilities proposed for inclusion and any central functions such as procurement, IT or administration. Explain how responsibilities and information move between those functions and each facility.
The proposed scope, personnel, sites, operating patterns and relevant programme affect assessment planning. Readiness and the response to audit findings also affect timing. Provide this information to request a quotation; there is no universal price or guaranteed completion date.
