ISO 9001 certification

A quality management system can make customer requirements, process responsibilities and acceptance decisions easier to follow. Use certification planning to identify the activities you want assessed and the evidence showing that your quality arrangements operate consistently.

ASSESSMENT SUBJECT

Your management system

Certification applies to the agreed organizational scope.
Your application identifies the edition, activities and sites to be assessed.

UNDERSTAND THE STANDARD

What is ISO 9001 certification?

ISO 9001 addresses the management of quality: how an organization organizes its processes to meet relevant requirements and improve the consistency of its products and services. Certification concerns the quality management system within an agreed scope, rather than a guarantee that every individual output will be fault-free.
Start with the journey from a customer requirement to delivery. Where can a requirement be misunderstood, a change be missed or a problem recur? A useful quality system connects those points with responsibilities, checks and feedback. For a service organization, that might mean controlling the handover from sales to delivery. For a manufacturer, it might mean tracing an order through purchasing, production and release.

START WITH THE BOUNDARY

Make the scope clear.

Describe the products or services delivered, the activities controlled by the organization and the sites involved. Be specific about design, manufacturing, installation, distribution or servicing where those activities are relevant. A broad label such as “general trading” may not explain the processes that need to be assessed.

FROM INTENT TO EVIDENCE

Show how your system works.

These are examples of relevant information, not a universal list of mandatory documents. The evidence depends on your activities and applicable requirements.

01

How customer requirements are reviewed before accepting work.

02

How people receive the current instructions and information needed for their role.

03

Records showing how outputs are checked and problems are addressed.

04

Internal evaluation and management decisions that lead to improvement.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Put the scope into context.

Imagine a business repeatedly receiving complaints about incomplete deliveries. Counting complaints is a starting point; the more useful question is how information moves from order entry to picking, checking and dispatch. Evidence of an effective response would connect the recurring problem with a changed process and an evaluation of the result. This is an illustrative management question, not a report about an EQRM client.
Use this example to prepare your own scope and evidence.

HOW CERTIFICATION WORKS

A clear route from enquiry to decision.

01

Scope & application

Describe the activities, sites and standard you want assessed.

02

Assessment planning

Agree arrangements based on the application and programme.

03

Audit & response

Demonstrate the system and address findings with evidence.

04

Decision & review

Certification follows a decision, with continuing assessment as applicable.
An application or completed audit does not guarantee certification.

EDITION & APPLICATION

Confirm the right basis for assessment.

The planning reference is ISO 9001:2026. Applicable amendments, transition arrangements and the edition for your application must be confirmed before assessment is agreed.
Check the official ISO publication information. Use the official publication record to check the edition and related amendments.

CONNECTED MANAGEMENT NEEDS

Shared processes can support a coordinated system. Explain the common boundaries and the differences.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ISO 9001: frequently asked questions

Clear answers before you take the next step.
No. A quality management system certificate and a product-specific approval concern different things. If a buyer requires testing, a sector scheme or regulatory authorization, confirm that requirement separately.
Yes. A service business can describe the processes that turn customer requirements into delivery, review and improvement. The scope should identify the services and locations being assessed.
Describe the products or services, customer requirements, sites and outsourced activities. If a buyer has requested certification, include its exact wording and any acceptance conditions.
Other systems may share responsibilities or processes with ISO 9001, but each retains its own requirements. Explain the intended standards, sites and boundaries when discussing an integrated assessment.
The scope, activities, personnel, locations and applicable programme determine the proposed assessment work. Readiness and responses to findings also affect timing. Request a quotation based on your actual organization.
