FOOD & BEVERAGE
ISO certification for food & beverage
Follow the food-chain activities in your scope.
Production, catering, storage and distribution interfaces. Explore relevant standards and the scope information to prepare for EQRM.
ACTIVITIES TO DEFINE
01
Food production
02
Catering operations
03
Storage and distribution
Illustrative activity groups. The agreed scope describes the actual organization and work assessed.
YOUR OPERATING CONTEXT
Start with your actual activities.
Food and beverage organizations should identify their role in the food chain before deciding how to describe a certification scope. Production, catering, storage and distribution can involve different processes and responsibilities.
Explain the product groups, process stages, sites and outsourced services. If the organization handles several activities, make clear which are included in the proposed system. A certificate covering one operation should not be used to imply that every product line or site has been assessed.
A DEFINED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Make the boundary clear.
Identify the organization, activities and locations to be assessed. Explain interfaces with customers, suppliers and shared functions.
STANDARDS TO CONSIDER
Match the standard to the management need.
Use these subjects as a starting point for your enquiry. Each standard has its own requirements and may have a different scope.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT
ISO 9001
Customer requirements, delivery controls and improvement.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
ISO 14001
Environmental aspects and operational responsibilities.
WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY
ISO 45001
Work-related risks, participation and operating controls.
Choose standards that align with your activities, objectives and operating sites.
SCOPE IN PRACTICE
Follow the responsibilities through the operation.
A food business using a separate storage or transport provider should explain the information passed across that interface and how exceptions are handled. The application needs to reflect the real operation, not merely the address of the sales office. This example is illustrative and is not a prescribed control programme.
Illustrative scenario, not an EQRM client case study or a prescribed control programme.
BEFORE YOU ENQUIRE
Bring the information that defines your scope.
01
Products or product groups and food-chain activities.
02
Manufacturing, storage, catering and distribution locations.
03
Important outsourced services and operating conditions.
04
The exact food safety scheme requested by customers.
Add approximate personnel numbers, a complete site list and any existing certificates. Mention planned changes such as new locations, services or operating shifts. These are enquiry prompts, not a complete audit-document checklist.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Food & beverage: common questions
Answers to common scope and application questions.
Which ISO standards can food and beverage organizations consider?
Relevant options may include ISO 22000, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001. They address different management subjects; select according to your activities and buyer requirements. The list does not make every standard mandatory or confirm availability for every proposed scope.
Will ISO 22000 satisfy a request for another food safety scheme?
Do not assume so. Obtain the exact customer requirement and compare it with the proposed scheme, scope and recognition before applying.
Why do product groups and process stages matter?
They help describe the activities being proposed for assessment and the organization’s position in the food chain. List the relevant product groups, processing stages and sites instead of relying on a broad food-business description.
How should outsourced transport or storage be presented?
Identify the providers, the services used and the responsibilities retained by your organization. Explain the information exchanged and how exceptions are communicated across the handover.
What affects certification cost and timing for food and beverage?
The proposed scope, personnel, sites, operating patterns and relevant programme affect assessment planning. Readiness and the response to audit findings also affect timing. Provide this information to request a quotation; there is no universal price or guaranteed completion date.
