ACTIVITIES TO DEFINE
01
Store operations
02
E-commerce
03
Retail distribution
Illustrative activity groups. The agreed scope describes the actual organization and work assessed.
YOUR OPERATING CONTEXT
Start with your actual activities.
Retailers may coordinate stores, online channels, warehouses and outsourced delivery. A useful scope description identifies which of those activities and locations are controlled by the applicant’s management system.
Map the relationship between purchasing, stock control, customer service and fulfilment. Explain the distinction between company-operated stores, franchises and other sellers using the same platform or brand. Customer-facing consistency depends on those interfaces, but their inclusion cannot be assumed.
A DEFINED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Make the boundary clear.
Identify the organization, activities and locations to be assessed. Explain interfaces with customers, suppliers and shared functions.
STANDARDS TO CONSIDER
Match the standard to the management need.
Use these subjects as a starting point for your enquiry. Each standard has its own requirements and may have a different scope.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT
ISO 9001
Customer requirements, delivery controls and improvement.
INFORMATION SECURITY
ISO/IEC 27001
Information risks, access and supplier interfaces.
BUSINESS CONTINUITY
ISO 22301
Critical activities, disruption and recovery arrangements.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
ISO 14001
Environmental aspects and operational responsibilities.
Choose standards that align with your activities, objectives and operating sites.
SCOPE IN PRACTICE
Follow the responsibilities through the operation.
An online retailer may outsource warehousing while handling customer orders and complaints internally. Its application should show that division of responsibilities. A certificate for the central operation should not be described as approval of every supplier product or external fulfilment partner.
Illustrative scenario, not an EQRM client case study or a prescribed control programme.
BEFORE YOU ENQUIRE
Bring the information that defines your scope.
01
Sales channels, store networks and fulfilment arrangements.
02
Company-operated and franchise responsibilities.
03
Information flows between platforms and service providers.
04
Product-specific approvals or customer requirements outside the system scope.
Add approximate personnel numbers, a complete site list and any existing certificates. Mention planned changes such as new locations, services or operating shifts. These are enquiry prompts, not a complete audit-document checklist.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Retail: common questions
Answers to common scope and application questions.
Which ISO standards can retail organizations consider?
Relevant options may include ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 22301, ISO 14001. They address different management subjects; select according to your activities and buyer requirements. The list does not make every standard mandatory or confirm availability for every proposed scope.
Does certification mean that every product sold is ISO certified?
No. Avoid applying a management-system claim to individual products in a way that suggests product certification. Verify the separate evidence for any product claim.
Can online sales and physical stores share a scope?
They can be discussed together when their organizational boundaries and management arrangements are clear. Explain how orders, stock, returns and complaints move between channels and sites.
Are franchise stores covered by the central company’s certificate?
Coverage must be established from the certified entity, scope and site information. A shared brand does not automatically include independently operated stores or their activities.
What affects certification cost and timing for retail?
The proposed scope, personnel, sites, operating patterns and relevant programme affect assessment planning. Readiness and the response to audit findings also affect timing. Provide this information to request a quotation; there is no universal price or guaranteed completion date.
